The confirmed setup.

The project documents testing on a 2026 Tesla Model 3 with HW4, using a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W. Glovebox uses the standard TeslaCam drive structure. Other models may work, but this is an expectation rather than confirmed model-by-model validation.

Can I use a different Pi?

The image is for the Pi Zero 2 W; Glovebox itself is not limited to that board. The project provides install.sh for other supported boards, with a hardware check. The Zero and Zero W can use their data port; Pi 4, 5, 400, 500 and CM4/CM5 setups can use the appropriate USB-C/device-capable port. Other boards may work with a supported USB device controller and suitable Debian-based Linux. USB device (gadget) support is required. Pi 4 and Pi 5 support that through USB-C, but may need more power than the car’s port supplies. Pi 1, 2, and 3B cannot act as a USB drive.

For alternatives, start with the current project guidance. Avoid buying a different board on the assumption it will work.

Encrypted clips have a different viewing path.

Glovebox backs them up as they are. They appear with a lock, and you can download an event or drive to open at dashcam.tesla.com while signed in to Tesla. The six-camera browser player is for unencrypted footage.

What can the Bluetooth key do?

The project uses Tesla’s limited Charging Manager role. In project tests it could wake the car and read charge level, and could not unlock, remote-start, flash lights, or open the charge port. Remove its key any time under Controls → Locks → Keys.

A trusted network is part of the setup.

The device interface has no login. Anyone on the same reachable network can view recordings and change settings. First-run Wi-Fi is open until setup completes. Configure in a trusted location, protect the home network, and do not expose the device to the public internet.
